J.Alphonse Nicholson is an up-and-coming drummer who has quickly made a name for himself in the music industry. A Louisiana native, Nicholson started playing drums at the age of four and hasn't stopped ever since. In his career to date, he has performed with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Trombone Shorty, Galactic ,and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. J. Alphonse Nicholson was born on July 6, 1985 ,in Shaker Heights, Ohio. His mother is a jazz singer and his father is a drummer and has two older sisters. His father's band gave his first appearance at a church picnic. He graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 2002 and received a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studying jazz performances, graduating in 2006. After graduation, Alphonse moved to New York and began working as a freelance drummer.
He has played with various artists including Jerry Douglas,
Stanley Jordan, Talib Kweli, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Marcus Miller. In 2010,
she toured with Meshell Ndegeocello as her drummer and music director. He
toured Europe with Stanley Jordan the following year. He recorded "The
J-Man Project," his debut album as a leader, in 2012. The album features
some of New York's top musicians, including Lionel Loueke, Marcus Strickland,
and Ben Williams. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2013 and started working as a
studio musician there.
He currently plays the role of Lil Murdy in P-Valley on
STARZ. Season 2 is currently underway, and Nicholson continues to dazzle
audiences with his drumming skills and acting. She is quickly becoming one of
the most exciting new talents on television. Set in the fictional city of
Clarksdale, Mississippi, the show follows the lives of strip club workers as
they roam the unique and often dangerous world they inhabit.
