Anne Garrels, also known as Anne Longworth Garrels, was an American journalist and correspondent. She has worked for National Public Radio, ABC News, and the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). In 2003, she became famous as the only American journalist to report from Baghdad during the US "shock and horror" bomb campaign.

On July 2, 1951, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Anne Garrels was born. In early childhood, she was raised by her parents in London. Her father, John C. Garrels Jr., worked as an executive director of the US agrochemical and biotechnology corporation Monsanto Company, and her mother was Valarie S. Garrels, who died when Anne was 25 years old. She had two older siblings. Anne completed her education at an independent girls' school, St Catherine's School. Upon graduation, she entered Middlebury College, a private liberal arts college in Middlebury, but later transferred to the Women's Liberal Arts College at Cambridge, Radcliffe College, and Harvard University. She graduated in Russian in 1972.
Garrels was a fearless
and brave reporter. She began her journalistic journey in 1975 when she got a
job as a researcher on the ABC network. She held several positions, including
the head and correspondent of the Moscow office. From 1984 to 1985, she served
as the head of the Central American Bureau, and in 1985 she moved to
Washington, where she took up the position of State Department correspondent
for NBC News. In 1988, she joined the NPR and began reporting on conflicts in
various nations. In 2003, she was visiting and reporting live from Baghdad during
the Iraq war.
She was one of the
regular reporters during the November 2004 attack on Fallujah. The following
year, she reported on the January 2005 elections to the Iraqi interim
government as well as the constitutional referendum. After more than ten years
with the NPR, Anne retired in 2010. She is not only a writer but also a
journalist. After returning from Iraq after the 2003 Iraq war was reported, she
published a memoir, Naked in Baghdad, in which she shared her time during the
invasion and other events. In 2016, she published her second book, Putin's
Country: Journey to the Real Russia with Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.
Anne has been away
from posting her personal life on social media platforms like Instagram. She
was only active on Twitter. She joined Twitter in June 2011 where she posted

Anne married J. Vinton
Lawrence, an artist, and paramilitary officer of the US Central Intelligence
Agency. He has worked with the Hmong tribe and CIA-owned Air America. He died
of leukemia in 2016. She had no children but managed to maintain a good
relationship with her stepdaughters Rebecca Lawrence and Gabrielle Strand. At
the age of 71, Anne Garrels passed away from lung cancer on September 7, 2022.
Anne has worked with passion all her life. She has been under extreme conditions in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, and the West Bank to report on conflicts. In 2019, she collaborated with Ensemble Galilei and another NPR reporter, Neal Conan, on the project "Between War and Here."
