Uju Anya was born in Nigeria on August 4, 1977. At the age of 10, she moved to the United States with her mother and brother. Her mother left her marriage due to father Uju's extramarital affairs and took her two children to America. Uju joined the private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth College to complete her Romance Studies in 1998. She completed postgraduate studies in Brazilian studies at Brown University, University of Providence, Rhode Island. She later left for the University of California, Los Angeles, to pursue a PhD in applied linguistics.
Uju has a long history
of research and professorial careers. She started teaching in 1998, teaching at
Phillips Academy Andover, where she taught Spanish. Then, in 2001, she was visiting
lecturer in Portuguese at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Dartmouth
College. From 2003-2005, she designed and taught English and Portuguese as a
Master's Teacher at the Center for World Languages and Cultures in Rassias,
before joining UCLA's Department of Applied Linguistics as a lecturer in
Applied Linguistics and English in 2008. She worked there for four years before
being appointed Assistant Professor of Clinical Education at the Rossier School
of Education, University of Southern California (2012-2016)
In summer 2003 she
also worked as visiting assistant professor and director of the Spanish and
Portuguese department of Dartmouth College. There, she led 18 students in study
and family stays programs to learn Portuguese. Since 2016, he has been an
Assistant Professor of Second Language Teaching, Department of Curriculum &
Instruction Research Affiliate, at The College of Education at Pennsylvania
State University. As a scientist, she received various grants. She has been
awarded a principal investigator several times. She also received scholarships
as a Co-researcher and Expert Consultant.
Since 1998, Uju has
received many honors and awards, and received the Phillips Academy Andover
Spanish Teaching Fellowship. In 1999, she received the Irene Diamond Fellowship
for Graduate Study at Brown University. At UCLA, she received a Eugene
Cota-Robles Scholarship for PhD in 2007. A year later, she received the Centro
Latino award for the Literacy Manos Amigas Volunteer of the Year. The latest
award she received is the 2020 Penn State College of Education Award for
Outstanding Teaching. In 2019, she received two awards - the American
Association for Applied Linguistics First Book Award and the ACTFL / Middlebury
Research Forum Invited Scholar.
Uju Anya married a man
before revealing herself as a lesbian. She shared on Twitter that she lived in
Brazil with a woman before she met her ex-husband. When she realized that she
was not bisexual but lesbian, she divorced her husband. She is the sole parent
of two kids.
Uju has a private Instagram account with over 2,000 followers. He may not like sharing his personal photos and life on social media, but expresses himself openly on Twitter.
