Controversy
As a teenager, he was
accused and forced to confess to the rape of New York runner Trisha Ellen
Meili. Along with him, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, and Korey
Wise were all arrested as adolescents. They were all aged between fourteen and
sixteen. On the night of April 19, 1989, Trisha was found unconscious with a
fractured skull, a body temperature of 84 degrees, and 75% of her blood drained
from her body. She didn't remember the attack when she started to feel better.
In two separate trials, all of the teenagers were found guilty of the assaults. Raymond was tried as a minor and convicted of rape and assault and sentenced to five to ten years in prison. Later, Matias Reyes acknowledged that it was his fault. On December 19, 2002, the Manhattan District Attorney stated that five men had been discharged from their convictions. Raymond was imprisoned for five years for a crime he didn't commit.
