Tomie dePaola was an American writer and
illustrator who created over 270 books for children, such as Strega Nona. At
the age of 85, he passed away on March 30, 2020. He was born on September 15,
1934, in Meriden, Connecticut, and grew up during the crisis of World War II. In
2011, he received the Children's Literature Legacy Award for lifetime
achievement in American children's literature.

DePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut to
Joseph and Florence DePaola to parents of Irish and Italian descent. He had a
brother, Joseph (nicknamed Buddy), and two sisters, Judie and Maureen. His book
The Baby Sister is about Maureen's birth.
He credits his parents for nurturing his love
of books and turning him into a reader at an early age. When he was just four
years old, he told people he wanted to be an artist: "I'm going to be an
artist. I will write stories and draw pictures for books, and I will sing and dance
on stage. He was a stubborn boy who did not change his decision for a split
second and aimed only at the profession of an artist.

Tomie dePaola
Education
After graduating from high school, Tomie
studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, graduating with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts degree in 1956.
DePaola taught art outside of Boston from 1962 to 1966 at Newton College of the Sacred Heart, then moved to California where he taught at the San Francisco Women's College from 1967 to 1970. He received his MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1969 and the equivalent of a Ph.D. at Lone Mountain College in San Francisco.
DePaola relocated to New England in the 1970s, where from 1972 to 1973 he was an art instructor at Chamberlayne Junior College in Boston. From 1973 to 1976 Tomie dePaola worked as an associate professor, designer, and technical director at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire in the language and theater department and as an author, set designer, and costume designer for a children's theater project. From 1976 to 1978 he taught art at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire.

DePaola landed his
first book contract after completing Pratt, a job that illustrated a book
titled Sound. Soon after, he published his book, The Miracle Dragon of Timlin,
about a pink dragon that everyone in the Timlin Kingdom adored.
He spent much of his
time sharing his knowledge in the classroom, teaching in schools outside of
Boston and California in the 1960s. However, in the 1970s he returned to his
home region of New England, taught art at Chamberlayne Junior College in Boston, and worked at Colby-Sawyer College in New England Hampshire. He taught, wrote,
directed, and designed sets and costumes for theater projects for children. Before
quitting full-time instruction, he held a teaching position at New England
College after this one.
In 1978, DePaola ended his full-time teaching career to focus on writing and illuminating books. dePaola provided illustrations for Maggie and the Monster Baby (Holiday House, 1987) by Elizabeth Winthrop.

DePaola died at
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, according to his
literary agent Doug Whiteman. He was seriously injured in a fall last week and
died following surgery on March 30, 2020.

University of Minnesota Kerlan Award, the Regina Medal of the Catholic
Libraries Association, and the Sarah Joseph Hale Award, a prestigious writing
award given by a New Zealander.

In 1990, he was also nominated by the Americans for the international Hans Christian Andersen in the field of illustration. The American Library Association awarded Strega Nona the Caldecott Book of Honor and 26 Fairmount Avenue the Newbery Book of Honor. In 2011, he was named the recipient of the Children's Literature Heritage Award (called the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award until June 2018) for his "substantial and enduring contribution to children's literature". In 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show.

Connecticut, Georgetown University, and the Pratt Institute awarded him
honorary doctorates, among others. The Pratt Institute named him "one of
