Brittney Griner was appointed by the WNBA in
2013 by Phoenix Mercury as the first overall choice. She played her debut match
on May 27, 2013, against Chicago Sky, where she made a WNBA dunk record by
making two dunks that matched Candace Parker's career. Thus, she became the
third WNBA player to produce dunks and the first to do so twice in one game.
She had to miss the 2013 WNBA All-Star game with a right knee injury and was
later replaced by fellow player Tina Thompson at the time. Griner re-contracted
with Mercury on March 12, 2017, after her rookie contract expired.
In 2020, her playing season was cut short by
COVID-19 and therefore she has only played 22 bubble games at IMG Academy.
After completing 12 games, it was announced that Griner would leave the bubble
for some undisclosed reasons. Without the Griner, the team would have 13-9 as
the number 5 seed, and they would not be able to reach the second round until
they lost to the Minnesota Lynx in the qualifying round.
On February 17, 2022, Griner was found with
drugs and arrested in Russia for assault on drug possession. She was detained
at Sheremetyevo International Airport, where she was found with vaporizer
cartridges containing hash oil. She is one of the best gold medalists who have
flourished in the WNBA in recent years. Although she was found guilty and said
she had inadvertently had the substance in her bag, she still enjoys support from
basketball teams and WNBA peers. If Griner had been convicted of the assault
she had committed, she would have been sentenced to at least 10 years in
prison. However, the trial was postponed until July 14, 2022, and Griner
expressed her thoughts that she had committed the act through negligence.
In one of the interviews, Griner announced that
she was a lesbian. She also revealed that she was bullied as a child because of
her greater height, sexuality, and everything. She feels passionate about
teaching children to pay attention to bullying, especially toward LGBT people.
On August 14, 2014, Griner announced her engagement to fellow WNBA player Glory
Johnson. Despite their involvement, they were both arrested on suspicion of
assault and disturbance due to a fight in which both partners showed injuries.
Despite this incident, on May 8, 2015, in Phoenix, they exchanged marriage
rituals. Then on June 4, 2015, the couple announced that Johnson was pregnant
with twins.
In less than a month, Griner applied for a marriage
annulment, citing fraud and coercion, which was later rejected. Later, on
October 12, 2015, Griner's wife, Johnson, gave birth to two twin sisters
prematurely at week 16. During this time, Griner received a notice to pay the
expenses to raise the children and maintain his wife Johnson's expenses. The
couple later filed for divorce in June 2016. In August 2018, Griner became
engaged to Cherelle Watson, and they later exchanged marriage rituals in June
2019. Watson changed her name and announced her publicly as Cherelle Griner.
